Shazam! Fury of the Gods is bringing back Billy Batson and his alter ego next year. After the first film brought a fun spin to the DCEU, the sequel might be heading in a different direction.
Producer of Fury of the Gods, Peter Safran, spoke to Collider about what we can expect from the second entry. Though the film is expected to maintain its humour, Shazam 2 will see a more mature twist for the teenage superheroes.

Shazam 2 Producer Teases More Action-Packed and “Edgier” Sequel
Fans can expect Fury of the Gods to expand on the original's strong humour while offering bigger set pieces for the family of super-beings.
I feel like this second one has more emotion, more humour, but it also has bigger action, bigger set pieces, some great villains. I just feel like it's everything that we loved in the first movie but really turned up to 11.
Shazam 2 will see Billy and his family tackling new threats in Lucy Liu and Helen Mirren. Safran mentions these two additions as highlights in the sequel, along with West Side Story's Rachel Zegler, who's expected to play a significant role.
So I love it. I think the addition of some of these new characters with Rachel Zegler and Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu are fantastic editions.
With the cast from the first picture also grown up, the producer notes that Fury of the Gods will have a more mature, coming-of-age story:
I love that the kids are all a little bit older now so we get to have a little bit more fun in kind of an edgier fashion with them.
