DICE’s military shooter Battlefield 2042 has endured a difficult life in the short time since its release in October 2021.
Suffering from low player numbers compared to its predecessor, Battlefield V, the game has been undergoing a lot of changes to try and turn around its fortunes, including the “winding down” of future development for its Hazard Zone game mode.
Now, reports have surfaced suggesting that the game’s development is truly being shifted to the backburner, prompting EA to issue a statement denying this is the case.
EA Responds to Battlefield 2042 Development Speculation
Speaking on his GrubbSnax show, Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb said of Battlefield 2042’s additional seasons: “a skeleton crew is working to pump that stuff out (in) the fastest and cheapest way it possibly can”, adding: “set your expectations very low for this content, they’re just gonna get it out fast and dirty”.
According to Grubb, the justification for doing this is to: “move everyone to the next Battlefield as quickly as possible, it’s abandon ship time”, adding that he believes games like Battlefield 2042 can be rescued, but that he also doesn’t blame EA if it wants to start fresh, citing Anthem as an example of the publisher doing just that.
Grubb concluded: “There’s no right answer, obviously, but it’s not a good look”.
However, EA quickly reached out to Grubb with a statement denying that this is the case, saying: “There is a significant team across studios focused on evolving and improving the Battlefield 2042 experience for our players, and at the heart of that is the team at DICE.”
It also added: “We are committed to the future of Battlefield 2042 and our areas of focus for the game, based on what we have heard from our players, was laid out in our recent development update”.
This development update is the same one from May, which featured the announcement of the game’s Hazard Zone mode being scaled back and also saw the game’s Senior Producer Ryan McArthur and Creative Director Lars Gustavsson discuss a number of other changes being made to the game in a video that you can check out below.
