COD 2020 news and rumours are few and far between - but the hype around the next instalment of the Call of Duty franchise has already begun.
It appears that Treyarch, who developed the last Black Ops titles, are leading the development - after studio issues with Sledgehammer Games.
According to Kotaku's Jason Schreier, the current in-development Call of Duty 2020 game was in “a mess” and Treyarch was handed the reigns to tidy things up.
Sledgehammer Games and Raven Software will support Treyarch on the game - with most of their focus on the single-player campaign.
"Next year’s Call of Duty has gone through a major upheaval, as publisher Activision informed developers this week that studios Raven and Sledgehammer, which had until now led the project, will no longer be in charge," wrote Schreier.
"Instead, according to three people familiar with goings-on at the companies, Treyarch will lead development on a new Black Ops for 2020."
So What's The Controversial Feature?
The lead COD multiplayer designer at Treyarch (David Vonderhaar) confirmed in a tweet that the game will not feature any jetpacks - hinting at a COD based in the past rather than the future.
When a Twitter user called PPerseting replied to the Treyarch staffer with a very eloquently put “you butter have jetpacks in the next cod", Vonderhaar simply responded “NO."
That prompted a lot more tweets, with some fans actually welcoming another COD with jetpacks.
One user, called Phixate (cited in Metro), said: ‘Jetpack CODs are the ones that promoted and rewarded players for playing aggressively.
"Boots on the ground CODs promote a slower killstreak-acquiring mentality which results in a lot of camping. It’s a shame the majority of COD fans prefer the latter play style.’
Another comment suggested Treyarch should put jetpacks back in CoD, to which Vonderhaar noted: "Such short-term memories. You hung me from the highest branch. No. NO. I have PTSD."
Vonderhaar has since challenged reports he confirmed jetpacks had been axed, but our instinct thinks they have been.
There are strong rumours the game will be returning to the Cold War and Vietnam - as well as exploring a new conflict, the Korean War.
So, will see a new Black Ops?
With Treyarch at the helm of COD 2020, it is extremely likely that we will see another Black Ops title.
Nothing official has been confirmed, but we can expect an announcement around May in the run-up to E3.
