Back when games were as simple as launching rockets to your enemies in Worms: Armageddon, buying games was pretty straightforward. Players would spend time reading magazines and watching E3 conferences to see whether they would purchase an upcoming title or not. Nowadays, new releases revolve around pre-orders, pre-launch footage, and ads that may come off as borderline deceitful. Gamers all over Reddit discuss what things modern games and publishers do that make them turn away from buying these titles.

They shared that a game that offers too many characters and too many endings seem to choose quality over quality. Understandably, having to finish different endings can bring video game fatigue to some gamers. They also mentioned that video game trailers that only showcase characters walking around empty spaces are a sign that tells them that the game has nothing to offer.

Many players shared what turns them off as well. Ads that showcase cutscenes and no gameplay come at the top of the list, along with dead, wide, open worlds that offer less than what was advertised. Games that include microtransactions and battle passes are some of the popular turn-offs in the list as well.

Others mention pre-order bonuses and paid early access. Star Wars Outlaws recently encountered a bug during early access, and players who paid for the early access will have to reset their playthrough and game time to solve the bug, which left many players disappointed. Some say that people shouldn’t have early access to games that are still full of bugs at launch.

While these practices are trending in modern games, video game publishing and development have come a long way since the invention of Pong. New technology and hardware have pushed the video game industry to what it is now and marketing and advertising these products are much more different than what it was before.
