SHIB holders may be on the market for second-hand goods and scalped gaming consoles after internet giant eBay replied to a tweet asking if it had thought about accepting Shiba Inu Coin.
In a reply to one SHIB holder on November 16, the AskeBay account tweeted: “Now that we're fully separated from PayPal, we're definitely looking at ways to help expand payment options for buyers and sellers.”
This comes after McDonald’s’ account also did the same last week, garnering attention from the 1 million-strong ShibArmy.
Let’s take a closer look.
Could eBay Accept SHIB?
While places such as NOWPayments are leading the charge in letting holders pay with SHIB, a Shiba Inu payment system on eBay still seems quite far off.
The AskeBay replies do further emphasise eBay’s willingness to support new payment methods. However, this is likely a standard reply from the support account rather than an expression of interest in SHIB.
Members of the Shiba community responded to the tweets positively. “I use eBay all the time, make this happen, please!!!” tweeted one user. “BULLISH!” said another.
eBay does not currently accept any cryptocurrency payments, although it does seem open to the technology. In May, it told Reuters: “We have no immediate plans, but [cryptocurrency] is something we are keeping an eye on.”
This puts eBay in line with other e-commerce giants such as Amazon, lobbied by 200,000 SHIB supporters in several petitions. Amazon does not currently accept cryptocurrency, although it may have plans to implement its own digital currency.
Meanwhile, a petition for eBay to accept SHIB has just 1,214 signatures at the time of writing.
