As this is a survival game, your character can become ill. This will cause coughing and infection that causes your "Blood" meter to drop. That gives a chance to fall unconscious, so you're much better off keeping yourself fit and healthy.

DayZ: How to Cure an Infection
DayZ's infections require antibiotics to cure, but you can also do things like build a fire to keep your body temperature up.
If you contract sepsis, you'll also need antibiotics but after thirty minutes the infection can be passed on. You'll lose three Blood every second. To prevent bleeding, you'll need Sepsis Bandages, a fairly uncommon item.
