The series may have skipped 2024, but the Castlevania spinoff Castlevania: Nocturne is ready to return to Netflix this week, and many fans are excited for this gothic vampire anime to return.

With Alucard appearing in the first season's finale, fans are excited to see him take center stage with this newer Belmont, Richter.

Castlevania: Nocturne Season 2

The series is set to come back with its second season this week, and Netflix has just decided to drop a whole new trailer out of nowhere, teasing the rise of the 'Vampire Messiah.'

The official description for the second season reads:

“The legendary Alucard, Richter Belmont, and his band of vampire hunters are in a desperate race against time. Erzsebet Báthory, the near invincible Vampire Messiah, seeks to plunge the world into endless darkness.”

In addition to Alucard and Richter, the second season also features regulars from the first season, like Maria Renard, the series co-protagonist with a special history that led to her becoming a target of the Vampire Messiah. Annette, a former slave turned magic user, joins Richter’s party on their quest to fight dark forces.

The French Revolution is the backdrop of the series, so fans can certainly expect some things from the history-based story. However, though the ending may be expected, the twists come when all these fantastical elements of killer vampires somehow almost lead to the revolution's death.

A Dark Gothic Dream

When it comes to the Castlevania series, there are several things to expect from Nocturne, which the trailer promises. Besides the use of fantastical powers to pull off some breathtaking action scenes, the series is also expected to have all the aesthetics of what made Castlevania such a huge hit in the first place—and that’s dark fantasy creatures and gnarly monstrous designs, not to mention some very slender characters in long flowing hair dressed in Victorian-era garb.

With Powerhouse Animation still behind the series, fans of the original shouldn’t have to worry when it comes to quality. After all, the studio has also cut its teeth on other animated projects like Blood of Zeus, Masters of the Universe, Skull Island, and Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft.

As if not to leave the gothic fantasy genre behind, series producer Adi Shankar is also hard at work with an animated adaptation of the Devil May Cry series.

Castlevania Lives On

Admittedly, the mainline Castlevania franchise has been dormant for a while, with the last mainline entry, Lords of Shadow 2, released in 2014. Though the game lives on spiritually with the Metroidvania genre, some fans would love to have a game that builds on the overall lore.

Until then, though, the anime series will just have to do. You’d think that Netflix would want to capitalize on that synergy of video game/TV series.

Castlevania: Nocturne Season 2 returns to Netflix on Jan. 16.
