Last year DOTA 2's largest tournament, known as The International, used crowdfunding through sales of their event Compendium to smash eSports prize pool records through the roof with relative ease. In 2014 they managed to raise a staggering $10.9 million to dish out to those teams that performed exceptionally at the event.
This year, The International is coming back to Seattle and is set to take place from August 3rd through to August 8th, pitting the world's most talented DOTA 2 rosters against one another for a gargantuan prize pool. Valve put up a base prize pool of $1,600,000, and just over a month ago released their 2015 Compendium packed full of stretch goals and in-game rewards for reaching them.
As of current, The International 2015's prize pool sits at $12,209,790, making it the largest prized eSports tournament in history once again.
Impressively, the Compendium has only been available to purchase for just over a month at the time of writing, meaning that there is still roughly another 35 days still available to further boost the prize pool dependant on sales throughout that period. We could well see this tournament soar all the way past $15,000,000 if the current sales speed is anything to go by.
There are currently three stretch goals remaining, sat at $13 million, $14million and $15 million respectively.
