In an ironic twist of fate, Assassin’s Creed Shadows has been heavily censored for its Japanese release. Weird gamers always say Japan is a haven for uncensored content, making the news even more hilarious. Fans who pay attention to Japanese versions of games know this is pretty typical behavior for the country.

A report from GamesIndustry.biz reveals that the upcoming Ubisoft RPG has toned down its violence for this version. Most gamers worldwide will have the option to turn amputations on or off, but Japan won’t. Japan's rating board, CERO, has confirmed that amputations will be permanently disabled in the region, and there is no way to bring back that amount of violence.

Before fans act like this is something new to Assassin’s Creed Shadows, various games had been censored in Japan, and Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 3 toned down plenty of its sex and violence to be released in that country. Capcom’s recent Resident Evil games have also toned down the violence before getting approved for release in Japan.

Western fans can sigh in relief, as Shadows will have all that gory mutilation when it hits stores. Players can chop up limbs and even cut heads off, unlike the Japanese release, just for fun. Gamers can complain about all aspects of the title they like, but at least they can get a gory version that Japan can’t.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows has endured quite a bit, and the game hasn’t even come out yet. Numerous delays, gamers being racist, and the usual Ubisoft business tactics can dampen excitement for any AAA title. Recent leaks have shown that the game has received some positive previews, so it might deliver on content and gameplay.
