Todd Howard has essentially become the face of Bethesda in recent years, often showing up in media events to promote the company’s games. While fans always knew how important Howard is, a former developer confirms that any RPG Bethesda makes has to go through him before any decisions are made.
Former Bethesda developer Bruce Nesmith was featured in the YouTube channel MinnMax, discussing the development process for the company’s games. Nesmith reveals Howard used to be a big part of the creative process until his responsibilities grew. Despite Howard having to manage more responsibilities, he still has the final say when it comes to the company’s RPGs.
“All decisions run through Todd,” Nesmith says, “He would hate, hate, hate me for saying that because he doesn’t believe it’s true. But unfortunately, it is true.”
Howard is aware that he has that reputation for having the final say and the Bethesda boss tries to shy away from that, according to Nesmith. Despite trying to stay away from the role, Nesmith says Howard was suited to it, since the man can supposedly look at things from a player’s perspective.
The news probably won’t surprise anyone who keeps up to date with the gaming industry, as Todd Howard is heavily involved with Bethesda matters. It was once reported that Howard was the only one in Bethesda who was allowed to talk about Starfield.
Some might wonder why Howard allows the company’s games to be so buggy at launch, though most fans don’t seem to care about that. Former Bethesda head Pete Hines once said that their games are buggy because they’re willing to take major risks. It’s why games like Starfield and Fallout have so much freedom, even if it means seeing characters pop up out of nowhere.

Bethesda fans can purchase Starfield on Xbox Series and PC if they haven’t yet. It was also confirmed that the company is now working on The Elder Scrolls VI, which has been a long time coming.
