Each annual Call of Duty release inevitably comes with fresh innovations designed to convince players that returning to the front line is worth their time. Modern Warfare 3 is the next instalment in the series and is already generating plenty of excitement among players preparing to load into the action ahead of launch.
Sledgehammer Games has already shared a wealth of information on 2023's Call of Duty, ranging from details about the Tac Stance mechanic, to confirming the return of an iconic villain in the single-player campaign.
Alongside the official announcements, various leaks and rumours about the game continue to emerge. The latest of these claims that an unpopular feature from previous releases could make a return in the upcoming version of multiplayer.
Unpopular Call of Duty feature possibly returning
According to notable Call of Duty leaker TheMW2Ghost, Modern Warfare 3's multiplayer is set to contain a feature that's been managing to frustrate players for the last few years.
Introduced in 2019's Modern Warfare, doors were intended to add an additional layer of tactics to multiplayer matches, by giving players something they can interact with to try and gain a tactical advantage. However, the majority have stuck to the simple strategy of running through rooms as fast as possible, rather than slowing down to peek through keyholes.
Judging by the comments on the tweet, there aren't many players in favour of the potential decision to retain the mechanic. One simply said: "Big L,", while another sarcastically added: "Sweet! I love artificial hindrances to slow down gameplay in an arcade FPS."
On the other hand, there are some who believe there's an easy compromise that could be made to ensure that the presence of doors doesn't negatively impact the experience of those who prefer to play fast and loud. One member of this faction suggests: "Destructible doors in Vanguard were the solution."
The ability to destroy doors would allow players to open up all of the entrances and exits into buildings, making things more similar to older instalments of the Modern Warfare series. That way, doors could potentially remain in Call of Duty without frustrating players that don't want them included.
As with all Call of Duty leaks, it's important to take TheMW2Ghost's assertion about doors with a pinch of salt until Sledgehammer Games sheds more light on what MW3's multiplayer has to offer. That said, doors have featured in two of the last three Modern Warfare games and it wouldn't be too surprising to see them return, despite player backlash.
