SEGA recently trademarked Ecco the Dolphin, which highly indicates that a remake or a new game is coming anytime in the future. Now that fans of Ecco have started to wake up from hibernation, Ecco creator Ed Annunziata posted a 2.5D GIF showcasing Ecco the Dolphin with modern graphics, sending many fans into a wave of excitement.

Posted on X, Ed Annunziata shared the GIF without actually posting any caption. The GIF shows Ecco tail-walking on the water around other dolphins. This is just a simple GIF post but it has stirred up great enthusiasm from fans who've been waiting for Ecco to make a comeback.

Ed Annunziata tried to crowdfund an Ecco successor years prior. However, he felt that the project couldn't be a successor to Ecco but rather it has to be Ecco himself. He has since been waiting for the prime moment for Ecco, as he mentioned in an interview that he will not give up his beloved creation.

Some say they can't wait to play Ecco again, while others feel that a spiritual successor to Ecco could be a better option. While this may be true in many ways, SEGA trademarked "Ecco" and "Ecco the Dolphin", not "Recco the Dolphin" as some may say.

Ecco the Dolphin's last game was way back in 2000, with Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future on Dreamcast. It was later ported into PlayStation 2 but that was the last time we've seen the adorable dolphin in gaming systems.

Despite having massive gaming titles this year such as Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, 2025 is still prime to give many gaming fans what they want. An imminent Switch 2 announcement, a new Pokemon game, plus an Ecco the Dolphin game would probably send 2025 skyrocketing as one of the best years in gaming.
