Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of Square Enix’s legendary Final Fantasy, has announced that he is working on a brand-new game project. Sakaguchi is a legend in the industry, so there is a ton of excitement behind whatever the developer has planned next.
On Twitter, Sakaguchi revealed that he went to the Ise Jingu Shrine and gave thanks for his “new project,” which has gamers buzzing. Because this statement was made in front of a shrine, Sakaguchi did not reveal what his next project is going to be, though fans are expecting another JRPG.
“Ise Jingu Shrine. I thanked the shrine for the start of my new project and for my good health during my physical checkup,” Sakaguchi tweeted.
Fans would love it if Sakaguchi’s next game was a brand-new Final Fantasy installment, but the developer hasn’t worked with Square Enix for a while. The last proper installment he worked on was Final Fantasy XI, a now-defunct MMO that doesn’t compare to Final Fantasy XIV, which is an absolute juggernaut.
Sakaguchi last worked on an acclaimed JRPG called Fantasian, which was a beautiful little title that impressed many. Using real-life dioramas as settings for the 3D characters to go through was a stroke of brilliance, as it made the title pop more than most in the genre.
At the time of writing, Fantasian is still an Apple Arcade exclusive, but it seems the tides are changing in that regard. Steam data for the JRPG was spotted by SteamDB viewers, with Sakaguchi admitting that there is interest in bringing the title to PC.

While Sakaguchi doesn’t work for Square Enix anymore, Final Fantasy is still a pretty hot series right now. Final Fantasy XVI launched to great reviews, with many fans praising the story and characters, though some were mixed on the Devil May Cry-like combat. There’s also Final Fantasy VII Rebirth to look forward to, which looks like a much-improved sequel to the exceptional Final Fantasy VII Remake.
