Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children might not have the easiest plot to grasp, but the action in the film is top-notch. Apparently, the action was so good that it inspired some scenes in The Marvels, as director Nia DeCosta referenced the film when pitching the MCU sequel.
In an interview with IGN, DeCosta said that Advent Children is an “amazing” movie and talked up the animated film’s great fight scenes. The moment she particularly loved was a climactic point in the final fight where all of Cloud’s friends throw him up so he can get the killing blow.
While DeCosta doesn’t want The Marvels to “look like a video game,” she does feel that games are becoming more cinematic. Referencing titles like The Last of Us and Horizon, she hopes that gamers who enjoy the blend of action and storytelling from those games can enjoy her MCU film in the same way.
Personally, we don’t expect Captain Marvel to slash up her enemy with a giant buster sword like in Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, but we’re willing to be proven wrong. At the least, it seems that Carol, Kamala, or Monica are going to get an Advent Children-like moment where they help each other get back in the fight.
Despite being more than a decade old, Advent Children still manages to make its presence known in today’s video games. Fans will remember how the Sephiroth Smash Bros. trailer was essentially Advent Children fanservice, with both characters quoting the same lines they said from the film. Much like Sephiroth, it seems that Advent Children, and Final Fantasy VII in general, will never just be a memory.
Advent Children will likely be referenced in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, though the devs have promised that this mini-game-filled sequel is going to follow the original plot more. Changes have been confirmed, with Red XIII going through a major change after Cosmo Canyon and the return of those annoying Whisper spirits.
