It's unlikely we'll see it drop on a Monday, but Sony's upcoming Garfield movie is set to be one of many films that will get an accompanying video game. As part of a Sino-American fund called Stars-Hana, the works of directors James Wan, Sam Raimi, and Roy Lee will all be reimagined for the gaming community.
The Stars-Hana fund is a collaboration between production company Stars Collective, which is responsible for all the films involved, and Hana Investment, which funnels resources into high-growth industries such as medical services and media. Co-CEOs of Stars Collective William Li and Nancy Xu see this as an opportunity to expand the reach of their projects, telling Deadline, "Video games carry equal weight in terms of their broad impact and ability to enhance IP".
Among those projects is The Garfield Movie, starring Chris Pratt and Samuel L. Jackson, which is set for a May 2024 release. It tops a list of nine films by the trio of Wan, Raimi, and Lee that will come to consoles and PCs. The other upcoming films involved in the fund are collaborations between the three directors, and will include:
- Every House is Haunted
- The Burden
- Hunting Season
- The Call of Cthulhu
- Mass Extinction
- GMO
- The Goxfather
- Memory Lost in Space
While these titles may not currently ring many bells, the Stars-Hana looks to appeal to a wider range of audiences, with their upcoming projects dipping their toes into a variety of genres. Horror fans will have Call of Cthulhu to look forward to, which Wan describes as a "dream project", whereas sci-fi enthusiasts can anticipate sinking their teeth into the likes of GMO and Mass Extinction, both on the big screen and on consoles.
While film-to-game adaptations can be somewhat hit-and-miss at times, there will certainly be plenty of content to consume from the Stars-Hana fund. One thing is certain: there'll be plenty of work done on crafting the perfect virtual lasagne for a certain hungry cat.
