IO Interactive’s secretive James Bond game Project 007 is still in development. While not much is known about the Hitman dev’s newest game, it’s allegedly closer to the serious Daniel Craig movies than silly Roger Moore shenanigans.
Via GamesRadar, IO Interactive — creators of Mini Ninjas — explained to EDGE Magazine that the studio is hoping to create the “ultimate spycraft fantasy”. While the game is still very early in development, a tone has been set for the upcoming secret agent title.
During a trip to the IO Interactive office, EDGE picked up a vibe for the new spy game. Not only will it be fairly serious, but it will also be more linear than the open-plan Hitman titles fans were expecting.
“The few other breadcrumbs we’re able to pick up in the office suggest a tone closer to Daniel Craig than Roger Moore,” EDGE writes. “And perhaps a more scripted experience than Hitman’s freeform jaunts.”
With IO Interactive CEO Hakan Abran claiming the title will crack open the ultimate secret agent fantasy for gamers, there is a belief that the game will have a heavy focus on gadgets. While Daniel Craig’s Bond may be more known for his brute force than his gadgets, the character relies heavily on tools that require a lot of suspension of belief.
While some Bonds have used anything from submarine cars to exploding pens to actual flame-blasting jetpacks, Craig’s bond is more realistic if still a bunch of baloney. Yes, he uses a crap Sony Ericsson phone to do his spycraft, but that dumb phone also manages to have a camera with further reach than a full frame telephoto lens. He also uses an EMP watch.
IO Interactive has prepared investors for a few years of decreased revenue as the studio works hard on developing its James Bond game. With this in mind, the game likely won’t be released until 2025, if not later.
With no new content coming for Hitman 3, outside of a potential Nintendo Switch 2 port, IO Interactive is resting solely on the success of this new game.
The new Project 007 James Bond game is expected to release on PC, Xbox Series and PlayStation 5 when it finally hits store shelves.
