After over a decade of competing on the big stage, professional Call of Duty icon Seth ‘Scump’ Abner has announced his retirement from the Call of Duty League (CDL) and his OpTic Texas team earlier than expected.
The North American veteran, known for his time as a stalwart of the green wall, called it a day on January 17, marking the end of an era in Call of Duty esports. Prior to the start of the Modern Warfare 2 season, Scump announced it would be his final year competing but has bought retirement forward following the first round of CDL Major 2 qualifier matches.
After leaving a huge footprint on CoD, its esports scene, and the wider industry, fellow players and stars from the world of sport paid tribute to an illustrious career.
Call of Duty pays tribute to Scump's career
To announce the news, Scump invited his nearest and dearest to his house and in typical OpTic fashion, a camera recorded the emotional goodbye to a career spanning over a decade
From former rivals to NBA player Karl-Anthony Towns, tributes poured in from across the world to commemorate a career that includes winning X Games gold, the Call of Duty world championship, and the Gfinity Spring Masters back in 2015.
Over the past 14 years, Scump accumulated 31 tournament wins including a victory in the World Series of Warzone’s Solo YOLO tournament where he outlasted 149 of the best North American players to win $100,000 in prize money.
Retirement means the entirety of OpTic’s dynasty roster that took home the 2017 world championship has hung up the controller. The end of an era for a player that laid the foundations for the next generation of players to succeed. Scump leaves Call of Duty as one of the greatest players of all time and shoes that are impossible for anyone to fill anytime soon.
