It looks like fans suddenly caught the Monster Hunter: World bug, as Cappcom’s hit game recently reached its highest concurrent player base on Steam after three years. This is likely due to the recent announcement of Monster Hunter Wilds, which looks more like World than Rise, hence an urge to replay this classic.
According to SteamDB, World was able to reach 131,964 on January 1, making this a nice New Year’s surprise for Capcom. PC Gamer stated that this is the title’s highest concurrent player base since October 2020, which is shocking since Rise and its new expansion are readily available.
Since Monster Hunter Wilds looks a lot more like Monster Hunter: World than Monster Hunter: Rise, it seems fair to assume that fans just wanted to play it again. It also helps that World is still a very good game and one of the franchise’s best, even if it doesn’t have Rise’s traversal options.
Wilds was also the last game shown off during The Game Awards, getting fans of the Capcom franchise excited after a rather dull show. Based on the trailer, it looks like the new region is bigger than ever and even offers fans rideable monsters, giving fans more traversal options.
Even though Wilds deserves some of the credit for this resurgence, Monster Hunter: World is still a pretty good game in its own right. After all, it is Capcom’s highest-selling game ever, selling 21 million copies back in 2022. The bonus of World getting massive discounts during the December holidays also helped, giving fans a taste of what’s to come.
The success of World also led to an expansion called Icebourne, which was also hugely successful for Capcom. Fans were happy to explore a new area in this world while killing monsters and turning them into weapons or armor.
