Mortal Kombat 1 has been a huge success, so it’s no surprise that the fighting game is getting even more content soon. Similar to its predecessor, Mortal Kombat 11, MK1 will soon get a big single-player expansion that continues the main game’s story, along with another “surprise.”
During an interview at Omelette CCXP23 (via Wesley Carlos on Twitter), game director and series creator Ed Boon confirmed that a big single-player story expansion would be coming soon. Boon says that it will be similar to the Aftermath expansion from Mortal Kombat 11, but also mentions a “big surprise” coming after.
NetherRealm Studios plans to support Mortal Kombat 1 for longer than MK11, which should be refreshing for players to hear. Considering how MK11 got plenty of support during its heyday, even more for the current game should be good for everyone involved.
Of course, more support also means more DLC and other things players might have to pay for if they want extra content. This is part of the major Warner Bros. video game strategy after all and it’s easy to see that the company considers Mortal Kombat a major IP. Unfortunately, that just seems to be the way fighting games are handled these days, for better or worse.
While most will agree that Mortal Kombat 1 is a good game, maybe even a very good one, the live-service elements are quite egregious. Fans are still pretty irritated over the seasonal Fatalities that they have to pay for, among other microtransactions. Players already accepted the fact that they have to pay for more characters via DLC, but finishing moves feels a bit off.
Unfortunately, it’s not like the competition is any better at this microtransaction thing. Street Fighter 6 recently revealed that getting each character’s third costume would cost $100, which is insane. We’ve seen similar tactics from Dead or Alive 6 and that game was also panned for its overuse of microtransactions.
