The Pokémon Company threatens more Detective Pikachu games in the future

Everyone’s favourite electric mouse is back on the beans in Detective Pikachu Returns, a mediocre follow-up to a barely-played 3DS game. Even if we wanted it to be, this may not be the last we see of the hat-wearing Pokémon.

Speaking to Japanese gaming outlet Famitsu, via VGC, Creatures Inc managing director Hiroyuki Jinnai revealed that more Pokémon Detective Pikachu games may be coming in the future. While it took almost around five years for the series’ most recent entry to release, more titles could be created.

“This [new game] concludes the story of Jinnai Tim, Pikachu, and Harry,” Jinnai explained. “However, all the staff also love the talking old man Pikachu, so maybe there will be a different development from the main story?”

However, the scary existence of more Pokémon Detective Pikachu games rests on the success of its latest entry: Detective Pikachu Returns. If the title is a commercial and critical success — which doesn’t look likely — then more games will plague future systems such as the Nintendo Switch 2.

“I can’t make any promises at this point,” gracefully added Pokémon Company president Tsunekazu Ishihara. “But if Detective Pikachu Returns is well received and there is a great demand for it, there is room for a spin-off.”

While we did not release a full review of Pokémon Detective Pikachu Returns, the general consensus is that the game is painfully average. With graphics somehow worse than its Nintendo 3DS original and extremely basic missions, the new Pokémon spin-off isn’t much of a success.

After the rampant popularity of the Detective Pikachu movie, fans were hoping this sequel would be a great spin-off. On one other hand, a new movie might be able to turn the game’s story into something good!

Detective Pikachu Returns is available right now on Nintendo Switch, if you dare.
