- April Fools post suggests SEGA Dreamcast mini is happening
- Fans were not fooled by the post
- Responses show demand would be there should SEGA release another mini
An April Fools joke hit where it hurt; the post in question suggested SEGA is finally making a Dreamcast mini.
While light-hearted, the post highlights a want for such a device from the public. A selection of games for the fake device was also posted, which, for some fans, made the April Fools post too obvious.
SEGA has previously released mini consoles based on their Mega Drive/Genesis and Game Gear systems.
From X/Twitter user RetroBlastUS, a post was put out that reads, "SEGA Dreamcast Mini has officially been announced. It's finally happening!" accompanied by an image of a Dreamcast and a selection of nine games for the console.
On the post, savvy fans responded, "It wasn't April Fools that tipped me off... It was that amazing game selection that instantly gave it away as impossible." another expressed their dismay, "My misery is immeasurable, and my day ruined. How could you do this to me?!?!"
SEGA has released successful mini consoles in the past, most notably devices based on their Mega Drive/Genesis and Game Gear systems. If they were to release a Dreamcast mini, fans would flock to pre-order.
The consoles typically came with a selection of the best games released for the respective systems; Nintendo and PlayStation also brought successful mini-consoles to market based on their classic systems.
The SEGA Dreamcast is one of my all-time favourite consoles. It was ahead of its time, pioneering concepts such as online play and downloadable content. So, seeing a post like this on X/Twitter while remaining unfooled gave me pause for a 'What If?' moment in my head.
For now, we SEGA fans can only hope for a day when SEGA decides to enter the mini console business once more.
