Anbernic is a brand popular with retro gamers, so it’s kind of fitting to see Sonic the Hedgehog own one of these bad boys. Ben Schwartz, the voice actor of Sonic from Paramount’s recent films, has revealed that he’s a proud owner of these retro handhelds. It’s not that surprising since these consoles are well-known, but seeing someone of his status have one is cool.
Schwartz told fans on X that he was playing Mega Man 2 during a flight, with the photo being a closeup of an Anbernic model. While Schwartz doesn’t say which model it is, most fans have assumed that it’s the 35XXSP, which is shaped like the Game Boy Advance SP. Due to the clamshell nature that resembles the aforementioned GBA SP, it’s one of the most popular handhelds from the company.
To the surprise of many, Schwartz did end up beating Mega Man 2 on his Anbernic 35XXSP before his flight ended. In fairness to the Sonic actor, Schwartz has appeared in YouTube videos before, playing and beating retro games on channels like Game Grumps. Still, it takes mastering the game to beat it in such a quick setting so bravo to him.
Retro gamers have been fans of these handhelds for a while now, with brands like Anbernic, Miyoo, and Retroid quickly becoming household names with these gamers. Out of these brands, Anbernic has proven to be fairly popular as they’ve released a ton of handhelds in all shapes and sizes. From looking like the Game Boy or being small and horizontal, the company has released a model for everyone.
