Fans familiar with Tetsuya Nomura know that his fingerprints are all over the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy and it’s been a net positive thus far. Intriguingly, the legendary Square Enix figure explained that he worked on the remake trilogy so that no one else would.
During an interview with Game Informer (via GamesRadar), Nomura brought up how he was asked a ton of questions about remaking FF7 during the promotion of Final Fantasy XIII. The legend knew that he wanted to make the remake and was thankful that Square Enix got the remake bug, which allowed him and his team to work on this trilogy.
Nomura then explains how he and his team felt it was their duty to work on the remake. They felt that no one else should work on it and they had to seize the opportunity while they could, hence, fans getting this gorgeous trilogy.
"If we weren't going to do Final Fantasy VII, others were going to do it, so we had to rise up and do it! We had the sense that we had to guard Final Fantasy VII and have to take this on, or someone else will do it,” Nomura explains. “I thought it may be a bit troublesome is other teams without us took on the project."
While some fans might see Nomura’s statements as selfish, keep in mind that the developer has been with Final Fantasy VII since the very beginning. The developer was responsible for giving us this game’s iconic character and monster designs, with their Remake counterparts only updating them slightly.
Of course, most modern fans know Nomura for his work on the Kingdom Hearts games, for better or worse. Although gamers like to make fun of the writing and non-sensical storytelling, the fact there are still fans who obsess over the lore shows he made a cultural impact. Once again, for better or worse.
