It looks like Palworld might be in the crosshairs of Pokémon after all, with The Pokémon Company claiming that they will be investigating the survival title. Many of us assumed that The Pokémon Company wouldn’t pay attention to another competitor, but accusations of plagiarism may have gotten the company’s interest.
The Pokémon Company released a statement through its corporate website, claiming that it intends to investigate its competitor to see if certain assets were stolen. “Appropriate measures” will supposedly be taken, depending on how severe these alleged acts of infringement are.
“We have received many inquiries regarding another company’s game released in January 2024. We have not granted any permission for the use of Pokémon intellectual property or assets in that game,” The Pokémon Company wrote. “We intend to investigate and take appropriate measures to address any acts that infringe on intellectual property rights related to the Pokémon. We will continue to cherish and nurture each and every Pokémon and its world, and work to bring the world together through Pokémon in the future.”
Now that Pokémon is taking action, it will be interesting to see how Palworld reacts to all of these allegations. Fans seem to have gravitated towards the game, enjoying the survival mechanics and creature-collecting, though the plagiarism allegations have been upsetting.
Only time will tell if this investigation will affect the future of Palworld, though it’s clear that the game is a success. At the time of writing, this survival game has already sold eight million copies, which is no small feat for any kind of game. Observers have also noted that this game is selling faster than Pokémon Legends: Arceus, something most competitors haven’t done.
Due to the success of Palworld, the game is going to get a bevy of updates that will flesh the game out. An update from Pocket Pair, Inc. confirmed that cross-play and PvP are coming to the survival game, alongside other new features.
