It’s been teased since November that SEGA was looking to bring back their cult-fighting IP Virtua Fighter. While a sixth game hasn’t been officially announced, a proof-of-concept video was showcased during a recent Sony press conference.

While the visuals did look impressive, this has somehow gotten some fans more worried than excited. So what’s the matter with the presentation?

Gameplay Concept for Virtua Fighter 6

For context, here’s a look at the ‘gameplay concept’ for the next Virtua Fighter game. Note that this isn’t actual gameplay, but the developers hope to deliver in the next entry.

Although the clip only runs for half a minute, many visuals are interesting. Besides the background and the more realistic fighting, some fans have pointed out that the game has very realistic blocking for characters, depending on where they’re getting hit.

When it comes to fighting games, characters usually just have one-block animation depending on where they’re getting attacked, but with the new Virtua Fighter footage, it looks like there are unique blocking animations—making the game look more like legitimate martial arts.

Why are Fans Worried?

While the look they are aiming for is certainly ambitious, some fans are wondering just how much work will go into the game to pull it off.

Youtuber Maximilian Dood expressed how much SEGA has boxed themselves in a corner, hyping up a game with footage that wasn’t even from the actual game but was something that was developed over a month ago.

Now, expectations are high for the next Virtua Fighter, and fans suspect that this will mean they will have to wait even longer for the next entry.

For context, the last mainline entry came out in 2006, and Virtua Fighter fans have had to watch rival franchises like Street Fighter, Tekken, and Mortal Kombat get steady new entries every few years.

Cautionary Tale

While the best-case scenario would be for Ryu Ga Gotoku to deliver exactly what they advertised, they might miss the mark. Cyberpunk 2077 was probably the biggest example of this major fumble.

Many fans were excited to get their hands on the game. While the marketing looked amazing, the game was too big to run properly on old-gen consoles. Now, fans are worried that the same could happen to Virtua Fighter.

If it’s any consolation, a release date or window has yet to be announced, so the studio won’t have a serious deadline to meet as development continues.

Fans hope they won’t have to wait half a decade before Virtua Fighter 6 launches. Now that the game has been officially revealed, the developers hope to keep fans updated.

No release date has been set for Virtua Fighter 6.
