With Illumination’s Super Mario Bros. movie becoming a huge success, fans think that the next logical Nintendo property to get a film should be Zelda. Although we aren’t getting a movie with Link yet, a fan-made short makes us wish Studio Gibli would make the film and base it on Ocarina of Time.
RwanLink shared a short fan-made trailer on YouTube, showing what an Ocarina of Time movie would look like if Studio Ghibli animated it. Granted, the video is in 3D and is made with Unreal Engine 5 but the character designs are definitely made with Ghibli in mind.
Ocarina is considered by many to be the quintessential Zelda game, so basing a potential film on the N64 classic makes a ton of sense. The story of Ocarina isn’t anything mind-blowing, but it’s a solid enough tale, filled with battles, time travel, and a legendary showdown against Ganondorf to boot.
Nintendo has yet to comment on what their next animated film will be, with most of us expecting a sequel to Mario first before anything else. Still, a Zelda film based on Ocarina of Time would be a solid film introduction for Link, as games like Breath of the Wild don’t have plots that translate well to film.
Seeing Link and Zelda animated in the Studio Ghibli style is quite nice, making many fans wish they would help make a Zelda title. Right now, the closest game we have to being a Ghibli Zelda is Baldo: The Guardian Owls, which launched poorly but got better with updates.
While we don’t see much Studio Ghibli on the video game side, they did make one standout RPG in the past. Ni No Kuni: The Wrath of the White Witch was made as part of a collaboration with Studio Ghibli and is still a stellar-looking game to this day. The sequel, Ni No Kuni 2, isn’t a Ghibli game anymore, though the title still uses a similar art style.

Fans who now want to play Zelda: Ocarina of Time can do so on Nintendo Switch if they have an NSO + Expansion Pack subscription. There’s also a 3DS remake that might be hard to find nowadays.
