The best games like Fortnite could be just about anything because the shooter is so versatile. Sure, most people indulge in the battle royale mode, but that doesn’t change the fact that there are a lot of people out there using Epic Games’ immense toolkit to make incredibly creative maps.
Table of Contents
Truth be told, Fortnite is one of a kind. There isn’t a single game out there that mimics its unique blend of battle and building to the same standard. Instead, we’ve split this list into two, with each of our choices either based on being the last person standing or exercising those creative muscles. Whichever ingredient scratches that Fortnite itch, we’ve got something for everyone.

Battle Royale
These are the best games like Fortnite that capture the thrill of the battle royale mode. If what you want is the thrill of competition, the challenge of survival, and the exhilaration of a hard-won victory, then these games have you covered.
1. Apex Legends
Platforms:
Apex Legends is still one of the best battle royale games out there. It’s one of the only ones that threaten Fortnite’s crown. Yes, yes, we can hear you shouting Call of Duty: Warzone 2 at your screen, but Apex takes the edge with its unique Titanfall DNA and a rewarding learning curve.
It has many of the battle royale hallmarks you’d expect. You drop into the battlefield with nothing, must procure loot dotted around, and fight others in an ever-shrinking play area. Where Apex Legends stands out, however, is its blisteringly fast movement and incredible abilities making for nail-biting fights. It’s fun, frenetic, and surprisingly friendly to newer payers too.
2. Naraka: Bladepoint
Platforms:
Naraka: Bladepoint is a different kind of battle royale game because, while it does have guns, the best fights are the ones using the awesome melee weapons. Combat is absurdly fast, and it asks for a bit more skill and timing than others in its genre, but it’s immensely rewarding if you can master it.
It also has grappling hooks, and being able to grapple around and cling to trees is something that should be praised in any game. New weapons get added occasionally, and you can also collect special gems to give yourself new passive buffs and even new attacks too. It’s also recently gone free-to-play, so now’s a great time to jump in.
3. Population: ONE
Platforms:
Population: ONE is as close to Fortnite as you can get in VR. Not only do you get to run around fighting in virtual reality, but you can also climb up everything as you please, and hold your arms out to slowly glide to the ground. You can even build levels in it too, and it’s had deathmatches added as well.
While not as many people have VR headsets, for those that do, Population: ONE is a must-play if you want to experience the thrill of a battle royale game with the potential to give yourself motion sickness. Make sure you build your VR legs up slowly if you’re new to this kind of gaming, but get stuck in here and you won’t regret it.
4. Blazing Sails
Platforms:
Blazing Sails is a pirate battle royale game. Need we say any more? It’s currently in Early Access, so it’s only available on PC, but it’s a blast to play. Aside from getting to be a pirate, which is the dream for many of us who’d rather be sailing the high seas than paying electricity bills, you actually get to design your own ship too.
There are different game modes to play through, you can team up with friends as you wish, and you can battle on the sea and on land. It’s a bit like a more aggressive Sea of Thieves, so if that sounds good to you, and it frankly should, then set your sails ablaze. Digitally. Don’t set fire to anything in real life; that’s bad.
Creative
Now we get to the best games like Fortnite that match its creative mode. This is actually a little trickier because while you could easily include Minecraft, we’ve not done so because we’re feeling frisky.
5. Garry's Mod
Platforms:
Garry’s mod is basically whatever you want it to be, and because it’s on PC, that’s actually what it is. There are no hard objectives here, no specific direction, but it is just overflowing with stuff to do, thanks to the games and levels people within it have made. Prop hunt, a mode where you hide as furniture, has even appeared in Fortnite because it’s so popular.
It’s hard to explain without seeing it, so just grab it, download it, and then search around for games that sound cool. Or make your own games that sound cool. If the world is your oyster, then Garry’s Mod is your suspiciously cheap all-you-can-eat-oyster-only-buffet. Don’t go to one of those in real life. There’s just no way it’s a good idea.
6. Dreams
Platforms:
Dreams is a remarkable game. In much the same way that Garry’s Mod lets you do anything, so does dreams, except it just feels better to do in Dreams. You can create anything you want, be it character models, music, shows, dioramas, rocks, nasal hairs, or full-blown games.
Other players can then search for those and use them in their own creations or just play through them. You can also go out into the world of Dreams to play the things other people have made too, which makes it a game that just keeps making games. It’s sort of the dream. Pun intended. That’s not even a pun. We’re not taking it back.
7. Meet Your Maker
Platforms:
Meet Your Maker is a first-person game where you build outposts to protect the resources you own. You can fill it with traps, make it as hard or as easy to get into as you like, and then basically open it up as a challenge for other players.
The other side of things is that you can go into the outposts other people have made and try and conquer them yourself. You get to scout each outpost out to see what kind of tools you’ll need for the job and then go on raids either on your own or with friends. It’s a lot of fun to play, and it offers a unique experience that captures a lot of what makes Fortnite so good.
