A new breakout hit on all platforms, The First Descendant has 14 playable characters to choose from on launch. However, when picking the best starter character in The First Descendant, you’re limited to just three.

First Descendant Best Starter Character
On launch, The First Descendant’s best starter character is undoubtedly the tank-based character Ajax. If you’re planning on both taking and dealing damage, you’ll want to start with Ajax, especially if you’re planning to solo his looter shooter.
On the other hand, if you’re planning to focus more on magicka, you’ll want to pick Viessa. An awesome ice-themed magic user, Viessa is an intriguing and effective DPS starter for newbies.
Finally, at the bottom of the list, comes Lepic. While a strong DPS character, Lepic is the least effective of the starting three.
How to Unlock New Characters
If you’re wondering how to unlock new characters, don’t worry. The First Descendant’s slew of 14 playable characters become available to unlock after the game’s deep 20-minute introductory tutorial.
Once you’ve completed the tutorial, you’ll be able to unlock new characters in the main hub. However, if you don’t want to pay to unlock more characters, there are also other options available.
Unlock New Characters For Free
As you continue playing, you’ll find Magister Anais inside Albion. Talking to the Magister gives you the option to use the Research Institute to unlock additional characters.
Similar to games like Warframe, you’ll have to discover blueprints to research additional characters. Once you have a blueprint, you can use materials at the Research Institute to unlock new people to play as.
