Square Enix's hotly anticipated Final Fantasy 16 will soon be released for PlayStation 5 and other platforms. The action RPG has excited fans with some of the new features shown off in various trailers, but will Final Fantasy 16 have multiplayer?
The Final Fantasy franchise has included multiplayer support with some of its titles, though is more common with the spin-offs. The mainline games have been mostly single player only with the exceptions of two MMOs and a standalone expansion. This guide will answer if Final Fantasy 16 will join the other exceptions and include multiplayer.
Will Final Fantasy 16 have multiplayer?
Final Fantasy 16 will not have multiplayer of any kind, and that includes cooperative, competitive, or even asynchronous multiplayer. The game is a strictly single player title.
It is not surprising, considering the majority of the mainline series are single player games, but the exclusion of multiplayer in Final Fantasy 16 is notable given the development team helmed by Naoki Yoshida.
Yoshida was responsible for Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn, the MMORPG that completely replaced the original Final Fantasy 14 after its disastrous launch in 2010. He and his team revitalised the MMO with the new version and have since released several expansions, including the Endwalker expansion in 2021.
While Final Fantasy 16 will contain a few pre order and DLC packs, there are no plans to add multiplayer to the game after launch. Final Fantasy 15 had added multiplayer in its Comrades expansion, but it seems very unlikely that the latest game would follow in the same steps.
