Ghost of Yotei was the saving grace of the September 24 State of Play, with the trailer showcasing a new protagonist, region, and timeframe within the feudal era of Japan that players will get to explore in this new Sucker Punch adventure.

We've analyzed the trailer to bring you four things we know about the game so far, which is set to release at some point in 2025 barring any potential delays.

Everything We Know About Ghost of Yotei

There’s really not much we know about the game so far beyond what was shown in the three-minute trailer. However, that doesn’t mean we’re completely left in the shadows. Here are four things to expect in this new yet familiar world of Samurais and honor.

New Eyed Samurai

The obvious difference in Ghost of Yotei is the change in protagonist. Atsu is the name of our titular character, played by prominent gaming voice actor and host, Erika Ishii. You might be familiar with her as she voices Ana Bray from Bungie’s Destiny, Valkyrie from Apex Legends and Mortal Kombat 1 as Sektor.

Recently, she took the mantle as the player-created Rook in Dragon Age: The Veilguard

SuckerPunch made the decision to move on from Jin Sakai’s story and focus on a fresh origin story. Despite this, the devs continue to uphold the prominent ‘Ghost’ aspect of the franchise.

300 Years Later

Ghost of Yotei takes over 300 years after the events of Tsushima. Set in the early 1600s, it sees the end of the Mongol invasion and the start of the Edo Period. History-buffs will recognize this as the beginning of the Tokugawa Shogunate after the historic Battle of Sekigahara.

This time period also features prominent historical figures including the legendary swordsman, Miyamoto Musashi. Additionally, it was also the beginning of Japan’s cultural development, resulting in kabuki, bunraku and ukiyo-e.

The devs didn’t confirm nor deny that we will be seeing these iconic characters, but it’s safe to assume that we might be getting cameos and easter eggs.

We Are Not in Tsushima Anymore

This one might be obvious, but the island of Tsushima has had its fair share of battles, however Sucker Punch is paving the way to a whole new location.

The game takes place in the lands surrounding Mount Yotei, the massive and gorgeous mountain in the heart of Ezo. Today, it is known in Japan as Hokkaido.

The PlayStation blogpost emphasized Yotei as an area outside the rule of Japan, filled with sprawling grasslands, snowy tundras, and unexpected dangers.

It’s a lush and serene place far from the organized samurai clans in Tsushima, making this the perfect place to start a new story. We’re not exactly sure how big the world map is, but we can speculate that it will cover the entire region.

PlayStation 5 Pro Enhanced

Ghost of Yotei is built from the ground up for the PlayStation 5. As a console exclusive, this doesn’t bode well for PlayStation 4 and PC players hoping to play it when it launches.

With the PlayStation 5 Pro’s announcement, it’s safe to assume that Ghost of Yotei will also share the enhanced graphical upgrades the console has to offer.

“We have massive sightlines that let you look far across the environment, whole new skies featuring twinkling stars and auroras, even more believable movement from wind on grass and vegetation, and more improvements we’ll share in the future.” Said Andrew Goldfarb, Senior Communications Manager at Sucker Punch.

He further added that, “Our new setting also gives us the opportunity to introduce new mechanics, gameplay improvements, and even new weapons.”

There’s a lot to look forward to with this brand new sequel. The announcement trailer was only a glimpse into the series’ new future and we can’t wait to see more. Ghost of Yotei is expected to release next year for PlayStation 5 consoles.
