Why’s now becoming an annual trend with each new generation, how to start the Pokemon Teal Mask story is something you might struggle with. Whether you haven’t played the game in a little while, or you happen to go off track before heading to Kitakami, knowing the various things you need to do to start the Pokemon Scarlet and Violet DLC story is tantamount to your experience.
As the first part of the Hidden Treasures of Area Zero expansion series for Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet, the Teal Mask part of the story alludes to the second part as well. That’s enough reason to believe you’ll need to clear one part to access the next.

How to start the Pokemon Teal Mask story
To start the Pokemon Teal Mask story, you need to meet a few requirements:
- Updated the game to at least version 2.0.1.
- You can do this by highlighting the game start logo on your Nintendo Switch home screen, pressing + on the controller, and using the Software Update tab.
- Started the Treasure Hunt part of the game.
- This happens when you head to Naranja Academy early in the game.
- Purchased the Hidden Treasures of Area Zero DLC.
- This is done through the Nintendo eShop and must be for the version of your game (Scarlet or Violet).
Once you’ve met these requirements, you can start the Pokemon Teal Mask DLC by launching the game.
You’ll receive a phone call through your Rotom Phone instructing you to head to the lobby of Naranja Academy. Speak to the lady, Briar, to trigger the cutscene, and speak to her again to accept her invitation.
How to get to Kitakami in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet after meeting Briar
If you decline Briar’s invitation to travel to Kitakami to start the Teal Mask story, just speak to her again in the Naranja Academy lobby to accept it.
Once you’ve travelled there the first time, you’ll be able to fly to Kitakami like you would any other location. Just launch the map with the X button and click on any location with the feather icon to fast travel there.
