Sea of Thieves offers you many methods to handle your loot, one of which is being able to bury your treasure. You can bury your treasures whenever you are worried about getting looted and then unlock and use the Buried Treasure Stash maps.
Your crew can always use the Buried Treasure Stash maps to unearth your treasures when the coast is clear. In order to keep treasures safe from other pirate crews, it’s a must for every pirate to understand how burying treasure works.

How to Bury Treasure
You can bury the treasure with the help of a shovel. Start by picking up the treasure, going to the selected spot, and placing the treasure on the ground. Then, use the secondary button/bury prompt to dig it in.
You can bury the treasure under soft surfaces like grass, sand, and dirt, but not under hard surfaces like stone or rock.
Types of treasures you can bury in Sea of Thieves:
- Firework crate
- Skulls and trinkets
- Chest
- Gems
- Storage crates
Buried Treasure Stash Maps
Once you fully bury the treasure, you will have a buried treasure map added to your inventory. The map will show an ‘X Marks the Spot’ indicating the treasure’s location.
You and your pirate crew can access this map from your quest radial. A physical map will also be stored in the map bundle and will be visible on the Voyage Table of your ship. Note that the Buried Treasure Stash maps can be stolen by other pirate crews who can then steal them, so you better keep watch.
For each island, you can bury up to ten treasures till a new buried treasure map is added for that island. For each item, an ‘X’ will be shown on the map. Once you dig up the treasure, the ‘X’ will be removed from the map.
