With the success of properties like Sonic the Hedgehog, The Last of Us, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, it would seem that the ‘video game movie curse’ has finally been lifted, but that doesn’t mean there could be a few missteps along the way.
Borderlands and Uncharted didn’t make the connection to the audience that the filmmakers were expecting, and now Minecraft is ready to release their own adaptation with A Minecraft Movie. The film looks to have a lot of Easter Eggs from the game, and a new inside look gives a better look at the Overworld brought into live-action.
Crafting in A Minecraft Movie
Thanks to a recent featurette for the movie, fans have a look at how crafting has been translated from the game to the big screen. Check out the clip here:
While gamers can usually just open up a menu where they can bring together certain elements and craft something new out of them, the movie has an actual crafting table (that also has the grid from the game) where they can insert certain pieces on the grid and craft whatever they want.
The movie’s unique spin is that crafters have to bang the table with a hammer to have a new item crafted.
Who are the Key Players in the Film?
Probably the best-known character in the movie so far is Steve (played by Jack Black) since he’s a character from the game. Admittedly, Steve is a character that the players can just make their own, but this specific version is made for the movie and it looks like Black has something special in store for him.
It’s also been revealed that Jason Momoa is playing a character named Garret Garrison who was said to be a champion video gamer back in the ‘80s, and it looks like he’s kind of stuck in the era of his glory days. While Steve is the resident expert of the Overworld, it’s Garret that’s kind of stuck being a noob—but that doesn’t mean he’s lost his massive ego.
As for the characters of Danielle Brooks and Emma Myers, not much has been revealed about them, but it does seem like Sebastian Eugene Hansen’s Henry is going to be the main protagonist who is a kid who needs crafting to get away from his troubled home life. The featurette doesn’t get into specifics, but a lot of people can probably relate to resorting to video games to escape some harsh realities.
Minecraft Fans are HARSH
As expected with every adaptation of a property with a massive fanbase, A Minecraft Movie is already showcasing some online vitriol after the first look. Admittedly, the leaning in on the ‘Steve’ reveal was a bit of nostalgia-baiting, but it does seem like filmmaker Jared Hess and creative director Torfi Frans Olafsson are set on delivering a movie that stays true to the core of the game.
If anything, they probably have a remake of The LEGO Movie on their hands, but they did say that there was a specific reason why this film was called “A” Minecraft Movie rather than “The” Minecraft Movie.
