After a year of incredible progress for online streaming platform Twitch, the company has revealed their viewship numbers for the year, the amount of money raised by streamers for charity, as well as several more impressive statistics.
Twitch, who were recently purchased by Amazon for close to a billion dollars, saw enormous growth, with the platform hitting 100 million unique viewers per month for the first time in the company’s history. These viewers watched a gigantic 16 billion minutes of content each month from over 1 million unique broadcasters. This is a huge step forward from 2013, when Twitch announced 45 million unique viewers per month.
2014 on Twitch was also huge for charitable donations, with over $10 million raised by Twitch and it’s broadcasters. Extra Life raised over $6 million for the Children’s Miracle Network, while Bristol based content creators The Yogscast raised close to £1 million for Oxfam, Special Effect and other charities.
In regards to eSports, Twitch has also been at the forefront of the “continuing evolution of an unstoppable phenomenon”. While eSports has proven itself to be an increasingly marketable sector, selling out iconic venues such as Madison Square Garden, SAP Center at San Jose, and Key Arena, Twitch has once again reiterated the essence and unique nature of eSports, with the Intel Extreme Masters World Finals boasting a peak of more than 643,000 concurrent viewers.
If this wasn’t already enough information to signify the growth of competitive gaming and online viewership, Twitch also stated that in December 2014, 12 Billion minutes of entertainment were watched through the streaming platform, double that of January 2013.
With the presence of Twitch ever growing, 2015 looks set to be another huge year for the company, with several content creators and eSports organisations choosing Twitch as their favoured streaming platform. To find out what all the fuss is about, you can head over to www.twitch.tv
