Apex Legends has bought back solos as part of the battle royale's Season 21 update.
Apex Legends often focuses on teams of three but for those that prefer to go it alone, Season 21 has the answer in the form of a solo mode packed with a wealth of new features.
Since its debut all the way back in Season 2, the latest season gives players an opportunity to fine-tune their skills and battle other players without the worry of hindering their teammates. However, the return of solos comes with a catch as it's only available for a limited time.
During a developer briefing, Respawn's events lead Mike Button shed light on why Upheaval is the perfect time to reintroduce a solo mode: "We're excited to give everyone an extended time for everyone to experience a new solos mode. With growing demand from players, Upheaval felt like the right time to reintroduce a solos experience."
Compared to its Season 2 iteration, solos in Season 21 of Apex Legends will look significantly different. Button adds: "We've introduced some new ideas to the solos mode based on the feedback we've collected since Season 2."
Solos will see the debut of Respawn Tokens which gives players a second chance at victory during the first four rounds of a match. For those who love to attempt a hot drop, this is great news if it doesn't go to plan.
A new Battle Sense mechanic is also arriving in solos. Due to the lack of communication from teammates, players will hear an audio cue along with a prompt on their HUD to signify there's an opponent within 50 meters of their current location.
All of these new features certainly sound exciting but for those hoping for a permanent solos playlist, it's bad news. Respawn has confirmed solos will only be available during the first six weeks of Season 21 before duos takes its place once more.
On the plus side, the developer is listening to any feedback fans may have on how to improve solos so there's always a chance it returns at a later date.
