Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was considered a dud when it was released, but like No Man’s Sky and Cyberpunk 2077, some hoped they could eventually save the game from its disastrous launch.
The game has just kicked off its third season with a new playable character, Lawless, and while she isn’t too popular among longtime DC fans, she does have an interesting connection to one of the core members of the Suicide Squad, Deadshot.
Zoey Lawton a.k.a. Lawless
Lawless is Zoey Lawton, the daughter of Floyd Lawton, a.k.a. Deadshot. She’s a superhero in an alternate earth in the comics that goes by the name of Liveshot, but with the game’s angle of having playable villains, she’s been rebooted into Lawless, a modern Robin Hood-type fighter who robs the rich elite and gives to the poor.
Her powers aren’t fully explained in the intro trailer, but some gameplay of her has come out online, and it looks like she’ll be using some kind of alien tech that will allow her to zip around the map. Like her dad, she also has some gauntlets that launch projectiles; and going by comic book logic, it’s very likely that Lawless has the same kind of lethal precision as father.
Where are the Other Villains?
Though Lawless is a legacy character by her own right, some fans have been complaining as to why she had become the next DLC character instead of another more famous DC villain. After all, they did introduce Joker as a playable Squad member.
Judging by how much of Deadshot’s characterization is now connected to his daughter, the inclusion of Zoey may be done for story purposes, as she is well-connected with Amanda Waller and joins Task Force X by the end of the season:
When it comes to other villains, it would probably depend on if Rocksteady can win back the player base. Star Wars Battlefront II may have launched poorly, but they managed to keep trudging along with the addition of several maps and characters over the course of a few months. Maybe Suicide Squad still has some more playable characters that they’ve yet to reveal; with villains like Black Manta, Deathstroke, and Sinestro wanted by fans.
Penguin is already a character that exists in the game, and with the popularity of the Max series, maybe they could find a way to retool him as a playable Squad member with an arsenal of weapons.
Coming Back from the Dead
Admittedly Suicide Squad is still at an all-time low when it comes to reputation, but there are some games that have managed to get out of totally dismal launches—it’s just a matter of timing. Cyberpunk Edgerunners the anime rejuvenated interest in the game overnight; maybe Suicide Squad just needs that kind of crossover hit that would get people excited to pick up the title?
