Square Enix’s PlayStation exclusive Final Fantasy VII Remake may be making its Xbox debut sometime soon. However, its upcoming sequel, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will still enjoy a lengthy exclusivity period on PS5.
Released back in 2020, Final Fantasy VII Remake was revealed as a timed PlayStation console exclusive. Since then, the game has made its way over to PC, but an Xbox port has been sadly absent.
According to Xbox insider Jez Corden, the PlayStation 4 and 5 exclusive action RPG is finally coming to Xbox Series systems. Speaking on the Xbox Two podcast, via Twisted Voxel, Corden teased that the game may be on its way to Xbox in the near future.
Corden explained that Xbox and Square Enix are currently in talks for the future of Final Fantasy on Microsoft’s platform. With the recent Final Fantasy XVI not performing as well as hoped as a PS5 exclusive, Square has already revealed plans for more multiplatform releases in the future.
Final Fantasy VII Remake is reportedly not still kept behind an exclusivity contract. Instead, the game can be brought to other platforms, like Xbox Series X or Nintendo Switch, if Square Enix wants to.
Of course, this does have its own issues. With Final Fantasy VII Rebirth set to be another PlayStation exclusive when it releases this February, Xbox owners will still have to wait years before they can continue the story. This isn’t exactly new; Square Enix’s Crisis Core remake is currently playable on Xbox without the main story on the system.
Square’s expansion of Final Fantasy onto more systems is also continuing with the arrival of Final Fantasy XIV on Xbox later this year. As one of the most popular MMOs of all time, its arrival on Xbox platforms is an important step forward for Microsoft.
The Xbox platform’s lack of key franchises like Final Fantasy has been a major nail in its library for the past generation. While it seems that the platform is posed to have a much stronger first-party presence with titles like Indiana Jones, Hellblade 2 and more.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth launches on PlayStation 5 on February 29, 2024. A PC release is expected to occur sometime in 2025.
