One of the biggest surprises of the Summer Game Fest period, Gears of War E-Day, is a horror-focused prequel to the iconic Xbox action series. Most surprising of all, though, is that the game might launch sooner far than anyone expected.

Although Microsoft has not yet officially confirmed the Gears of War E-Day release date, multiple sources claim they plan to release the game in 2025.

With release dates for Fable, State of Decay 3, and Perfect Dark also scheduled for the same year, Xbox’s 2025 lineup already looks stacked. But how likely is it that Gears’ upcoming prequel will actually launch in 2025?

In a report by The Verge’s Tom Warren, a very accurate Xbox insider, he claims that Microsoft is targeting a 2025 release date for the new Gears game. In fact, they plan to launch the game before Fable, a game they revealed way back in 2020.

The report states that Microsoft plans to launch Fable at the end of 2025, with Gears of War E-Day releasing sometime in the summer.

These plans for Microsoft are just that: plans. With Gears’ recent reveal, they could push the Xbox exclusive into 2026 if necessary. However, judging by developer The Coalition’s previous history of rapid development schedules, they could turn around this upcoming exclusive quickly.

Gears of War E-Day puts players back in the shoes of series mascot Marcus Fenix in the series’ most brutal and horrific scenario yet. Focusing on the Emergence Day event, players will experience the first time the horrifying Locust attacked humanity. For fans of the franchise, watching these events unfold will be horrific and heartbreaking.

At the time of writing, we’ve yet to see any gameplay of the new Gears of War game. However, that’s not indicative of the state of the game internally at The Coalition.

Xbox plans to release the new Gears game on Series X, Series S, and PC. They will also make the game available on Xbox Game Pass on release day.
