Naughty Dog has been labeled as “The Last of Us studio” by many, after the company’s recent releases consisted of remakes for these not-so old games. It seems that the studio wants to get rid of this moniker, with their president promising new titles that aren’t related to this zombie shooter.
Company boss Neil Druckmann spoke with the L.A. Times about the issue, promising that there are plans to release new single-player titles. Details on these supposed games weren’t revealed, but Druckmann is confident that these titles are worth investing in, so all we can do is hope.
“I promise you, we will not be ‘The Last of Us’ studio forever,” Druckmann said.
Druckmann also discussed how Naughty Dog works on their single-player games, saying that these titles need to be steeped in experience and character. As their previous titles have shown, it’s clear that they want their games to be story-focused, which is probably why they’re taking a while.
“We create experiences that are steeped in story and character, especially relationships,” said Druckmann. “The stories have some sort of philosophical core that everything is going to revolve around and feed into.”
The Devs at Naughty Dog have been struggling a bit with The Last of Us, recently canceling a multiplayer spin-off after years of development hell. Many have also assumed that the recent remakes of Part 1 and Part 2 were due to HBO’s adaptation, which gained critical acclaim. Naturally, fans are also wondering if we’re going to get The Last of Us Part 3 one of these days, which is always possible.
PlayStation fans love Naughty Dog, but they do wish the company would try and make other games. It doesn’t help that an Uncharted remake has been rumored, which is going to make plenty of fans groan. There’s also a good number of fans who miss the company’s Jak and Daxter games.
If fans haven’t yet, they can pick up The Last of Us Part 1 and Part 2 on PS5.
