- EA's CEO says the new Battlefield is a really good live-service game
- Gamers are burnt out by most live-service titles
- Battlefield 2042 was supposed to be live-service and it launched in a horrible state
EA’s CEO is claiming that the next Battlefield game is going to be a “tremendous” live-service experience, which is an oxymoron if we’ve ever heard one. Granted, most multiplayer shooters are live-service these days, but we’ll wait and see if EA pulls this off, given their recent track record with the series.
During EA’s quarterly earnings call (via VGC), CEO Andrew Wilson said that he was able to spend some time with the new game. Like we said earlier, Wilson claims that this is going to be a good live-service shooter, but fans have been burned before and will wait to play it before they judge.
“I’ve just spent a whole bunch of time with the collective Battlefield team playing what they’re building and it is going to be another tremendous live service,” Wilson said in the earnings call.
After Battlefield V and 2042 disappointed fans at back-to-back times, many lost faith in the series. For their part, EA is getting their best teams to revitalize the franchise, with both Criterion and Motive now working on these titles. It will be interesting to see if these devs can help restore the franchise’s reputation, though we worry this situation could end up like Activision’s Call of Duty development process.
Now that Motive is going to make the next entry, fans are slightly optimistic about the game’s future. Granted, this is because they worked on the excellent Dead Space remake, which isn’t getting a sequel unfortunately, so results may vary. Still, Motive have proven themselves and we hope that they can revitalize this near-dead franchise and make it better than, well, 2042.
Motive Studio are pretty busy these days, not only working on the new Battlefield but also an open-world Iron Man video game. Details on that title are pretty slim, but the devs have confirmed numerous times that this game is still in production.
At the time of writing, no release date for Motive’s Battlefield game has been revealed, so fans will have to wait quite a bit for that.
