Despite some layoffs from EA it looks like Respawn Entertainment is still going strong, with rumours that the company is working on a new Titanfall game. Before fans of this underrated franchise get too excited, this entry will reportedly not be Titanfall 3, though it is set in this game universe.
According to gaming insider Jeff Grubb (via Insider Gaming), this new game from Respawn is reportedly in the “prototyping phase.” While Grubb does mention how challenging the recent layoffs have been, this game will reportedly get a bigger team soon, so production might go smoothly.
Grubb is confident that this is a new game in the Titanfall universe, though he doesn’t know how this entry will be related without being called Titanfall 3. The insider does say that this is something that Respawn will have to work on since gamers are still nostalgic over Titanfall 2.
“The game as it stands today, as far as I understand it, is a Titanfall game – it’s set in the Titanfall universe,” Grubb said during the Game Mess Mornings podcast.
Fans should take this with a grain of salt since none of this has been confirmed and rumours of a new Titanfall game have been going around for years. Still, the fact that there’s so much interest in a brand-new entry shows that EA should do more with this franchise. That’s not to say this universe has been unused, as Apex Legends uses the same setting and is still a huge property for EA.
Before these reports, we haven’t had an official entry in the series since 2016’s underrated Titanfall 2. Despite poor sales, the game gained a huge fanbase, thanks to an excellent single-player campaign that exceeded expectations and solid online multiplayer that still has people playing. We’ve seen rumours of a new Titanfall game being developed for years now, but let’s hope this one sticks.
Although the timing for this news is odd, it's good to see Respawn already working on a new project, assuming this is true. The company was working on a new Star Wars FPS, but that was recently canned. Only time will tell if fate is nicer to this new game.
