Breakdown
- Nintendo has purchased Shiver from Embracer Studios
- Shiver worked on the miracle Hogwarts Legacy port on Switch, which means Switch 2 ports should be even better
- The Switch 2 is expected to be more powerful, so Shiver should have an easier time porting these games
Nintendo has acquired the studio that was able to miraculously port Hogwarts Legacy to the Switch, ensuring even better ports for Switch 2. Reports claim that the Switch 2 will be similar in power to the PS4 Pro, so the studio might have an easier time with these ports for the next-gen system.
In the publisher’s press release, it was confirmed that Nintendo purchased Shiver Entertainment from Embracer Studio. While Nintendo will likely have Shiver work on more ports for Switch and Switch 2, the company has assured that they can still do projects for PlayStation and Xbox.
"By welcoming Shiver’s experienced and accomplished development team, Nintendo aims to secure high-level resources for porting and developing software titles," read the announcement. "Going forward, even after it becomes a part of the Nintendo group, Shiver’s focus will remain the same, continuing commissions that port and develop software for multiple platforms including Nintendo Switch."
Shiver did an incredible job with the Switch’s Hogwarts Legacy port, so fans can see why Nintendo purchased the studio for themselves. The devs also tried their best at making Mortal Kombat 1 work on Switch, even if that didn’t pay dividends in the end. Hopefully, the studio will have an easier time with the Switch 2, which should be able to handle the next wave of ports.
The Switch 2 will be announced this fiscal year, though no details on this next-gen system have been revealed. Executives from the publisher did say that this is a “Switch successor,” implying that it will still be a handheld/console hybrid. Considering how successful the first Switch was, we can see why the company will stay in this direction.
Reports have claimed that this new system will be home to powerful games like Final Fantasy VII Remake, which still looks great. Now that Square Enix will focus on multi-platform releases, Nintendo fans can also expect more games from them for the Switch 2.
Expect more powerful games for the next Nintendo system, especially with Shiver as one of the publisher’s studios. Hopefully, this means less problematic ports for the next generation.
