Remedy Entertainment has now fully acquired the Control IP from 505 Games, confirming that they have the freedom to do what they want with this franchise. With Control 2 and multiplayer spin-off Condor doing well in development, Remedy now has full control over, well, Control.
VGC confirmed that Remedy paid at least $18.4 million to get IP back from publisher 505. There are still plans for 505 to remain the publisher of Remedy’s first Control game until the end of 2024, but after that, all rights will revert to Remedy.
Getting complete ownership over the IP seems to be important for Remedy, as the company wants to get all of its major properties back. This worked fairly well when they were able to get the Alan Wake IP, leading to the wonderful Alan Wake 2. We’re interested to see what they do with Control 2.
“As part of Remedy’s long-term strategy to have more ownership over our business and the IPs we have created, we have gotten back all rights for Control and the in-development Condor and Control 2,” said CEO Tero Virtala. “Having complete ownership over the Control franchise gives us the freedom to decide the best path forward. We will consider our options carefully, knowing that Control is considered an attractive franchise by many partners.
Control was published back in 2017 and proved to be quite a success for Remedy and 505 Games. Upon release, it was beloved by fans and critics alike, even winning Best Art Direction during Geoff Keighley’s The Game Awards. The game’s DLC was also well received, especially since it did start teasing Alan Wake 2 before that sequel’s release.
It will be interesting to see what other IPs Remedy will be looking to get back from other gaming companies. Quantum Break was another game they worked on, but the rights to that game currently belong to Microsoft. Remedy is also working on the upcoming Max Payne remakes, though that’s in collaboration with Rockstar Games.
