Redfall was a critical bomb when it came out, with many fans dubbing it as the worst Xbox exclusive released thus far. After developer Arkane Austin was forced to shut down their doors, Microsoft is now refunding players who purchased expensive versions of the game that promised future DLC.
Game Pass Tracker confirmed on Twitter that fans who purchased the Bite Back Edition or Bite Back Premium Upgrade are getting refunded by Microsoft. Now that the DLC isn’t being worked on anymore, refunding fans for their purchase was the right thing to do in the grand scheme of things.
The folks at Xbox promised that Redfall would get fixed after it received fairly low review scores, with a few patches released before Arkane Austin’s closure. While none of them were able to redeem this game, credit where it’s due as the devs were actively working on new content before Microsoft laid them off.
One of the game’s final updates actually added an offline mode, so anyone interested in the single-player stuff can actually play the game now. Considering the game’s critical reception, we would advise against playing this shooter at all, but those curious might have a good time in the end.
Like we said earlier, Redfall was a complete disaster for Xbox, launching in a buggy and empty state that made it a pain to play. Despite Arkane Austin working on excellent games like Prey, it seemed that multiplayer live-service shooters just isn’t a genre for them. To be fair, tastes are changing and gamers are actively against this genre, so it was going to be hated regardless.
Despite the game’s bad reviews, many agreed that the devs didn’t deserve to be laid off since they could have rebounded with a new game. The fact that they were fired alongside Hi-Fi Rush devs Tango Gameworks continues to feel wrong in every way possible.
Redfall is available now for those morbidly curious, but fans who want to play good Arkane games should pick up Dishonored or Prey.
