Sonic the Hedgehog received his own live-action movie in 2020. With a sequel forthcoming, the brand looks to be expanding even more.
SEGA and Paramount Pictures are partnering up once again for a third Sonic movie. Alongside the sequel, Knuckles is set to receive his own show. Elba is voicing Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and will return for the Paramount Plus series.
Sonic 3 Movie and Knuckles TV Spin-off Have Been Announced
Sega’s CEO, Haruki Satomi, confirmed the news while expressing his excitement with the upcoming projects:
We are delighted to announce that the third Sonic theatrical film and the first live-action Sonic series for Paramount+ are being actively developed. We’ve got a remarkable partnership with Paramount, and we are excited to continue expanding the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise with them.
After the first Sonic’s successful box office intake, it’s clear Paramount wants to expand on its influence in multiple mediums. Given Paramount Plus' lacklustre launch, the studio hopes the forthcoming Halo show and Knuckles will draw in subscribers.
Sonic's first movie was initially slated for its botched design of the famous hedgehog, though the filmmakers reflected on the feedback, leading to Sonic’s more faithful redesign.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 marks the first appearance of Elba’s Knuckles while Tails is also prominent, following the character’s tease at the end of the first movie. Parks and Recreations’ Ben Schwartz returns to voice the SEGA mascot, while Jim Carrey is also reprising his villainous role as the show-stealing Dr. Robotnik.
Along with several Hollywood projects, Sonic is evolving in the gaming realm through Sonic Frontiers. The ambitious title marks a step-up for the franchise, as the hedgehog traverses a luscious open world. We'll keep you informed as we learn more.
